Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Whole-system duct and dryer vent check with before-and-after photos - you see exactly what came out of your vents

Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Vent Sanitizing: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Guardsman vent sanitizing installation in Chicago typically runs $340-$580 for a whole-system treatment, and we stock Guardsman-compatible applicator assemblies and UV-C lamp modules on our trucks for same-day replacement when the original fails. Most homeowners discover the problem through persistent musty odors after their HVAC cycles on, or when a home inspector flags insufficient microbial control during a Lincoln Park or Wicker Park resale inspection. The Guardsman UV-C series was widely installed in Chicago-area new construction from 2016 through 2022, and we’re seeing the first wave of lamp degradation now, right on the manufacturer’s 9,000-hour lifespan curve.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman vent sanitizing falls into two product lines: the UV-C In-Duct series (model prefixes GUV-16, GUV-24, and GUV-36, indicating lamp wattage) and the chemical-applicator GVS series (GVS-100 and GVS-200 whole-home units). The UV-C lamps mount downstream of the evaporator coil in the supply plenum, the box that distributes cooled air to your duct runs. The GVS applicators inject a measured mist of EPA-registered sanitizer at the return plenum, where air first enters the system.

To identify your unit, look for the Guardsman label on the lamp housing or applicator manifold, usually on the side facing the furnace access panel. The GUV-24 is the most common in Chicago two-flats and single-family homes between 1,800 and 3,200 square feet. Write down the full model number and the lamp’s pin configuration, either two-pin bipin or four-pin single-ended, before calling. We carry both OEM Guardsman lamps and quality aftermarket equivalents from Abatement Technologies that match the 254-nanometer wavelength spec. The aftermarket lamps cost less, carry the same 9,000-hour rated life, and fit the original magnetic or electronic ballast without adapter kits. One compatibility gotcha: the GUV-36 uses a 17-inch lamp, but some Chicago installers substituted 16-inch generics that arc intermittently in cold starts. We verify length and pin spacing before leaving the warehouse.

Signs Your Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

Signs Your Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Is Failing
  • Musty or sour odor when the blower engages. A functioning UV-C lamp breaks down organic matter on the coil and in the drain pan. When output drops below 40 microwatts per square centimeter, microbial colonies survive and recirculate. The smell hits strongest on the first cycle of the day, before the blower has had time to dilute the stagnant air in the ducts.
  • Visible dark staining on the evaporator coil or supply plenum walls. We photograph this on every inspection. A healthy UV-C lamp keeps these surfaces nearly sterile; when it fails, the same condensation that cools your home becomes a growth medium. In Chicago’s humid July weather, we see significant buildup in as little as two seasons after lamp failure.
  • Increased allergy symptoms or respiratory irritation among household members. This is harder to isolate, but we note it in our job records. The GVS chemical applicator leaves a residual sanitizer film on duct walls that suppresses spore release. When the pump or nozzle clogs, that suppression ends, and accumulated debris in older Logan Square or Irving Park ductwork becomes an active source.
  • The indicator light on the UV-C ballast is off or flickering. Most GUV units have a small viewport or LED on the ballast housing. Steady green means the lamp is drawing correct current. Flickering red or no light means the lamp has failed, the ballast is failing, or the lamp is not seated fully in its ceramic socket after a filter change knocked it loose.
  • Applicator runs continuously or not at all. The GVS-100 and GVS-200 use a pressure switch tied to the blower. A failed pressure diaphragm keeps the pump running dry, which burns out the solenoid in about three weeks. Conversely, a clogged metering nozzle, common with Chicago’s hard water mineral content, prevents any sanitizer from reaching the airstream even though the pump sounds normal.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
GUV-16 UV-C lamp replacement $340-$420 OEM or equivalent lamp, ballast test, socket inspection, irradiance verification with UV meter, photo record
GUV-24 UV-C lamp replacement $380-$480 Same as above; most common Chicago installation
GUV-36 UV-C lamp replacement $440-$580 Same as above; includes extended lamp and heavier housing
GVS applicator pump/solenoid repair $360-$520 Diagnosis, parts, flow-rate test, sanitizer refill, photo record
Full GVS-100/200 replacement $680-$940 New manifold, pump, pressure switch, initial sanitizer charge, written scope

The range reflects access difficulty more than part cost. A GUV-24 lamp is $80-$120 wholesale, but reaching the supply plenum in a North Center basement with a 6-foot clearance takes twenty minutes; reaching one in a Hyde Park crawlspace with a side-mounted air handler takes ninety. We quote the full installed price in writing before any panel comes off, under Haven Standard Clause 1. Every replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, documented on the work order, not just stated in conversation.

What you can safely check: verify the lamp indicator light, confirm the unit is receiving 120V at the junction box, and inspect for obvious physical damage like a cracked lamp or disconnected tubing. What goes wrong when owners push further: UV-C lamps operate at high voltage and emit radiation that damages eyes and skin in seconds, the ballast holds a lethal charge even when the breaker is off, and the GVS applicator’s sanitizer concentrate requires EPA-mandated PPE and ventilation protocols. We’ve been called to correct DIY attempts where the wrong wavelength lamp was installed, the ballast was mismatched to lamp type, or the sanitizer was diluted to household-cleaner strength and simply evaporated without effect.

Tomas Reyes, our owner, put it this way after a job in Old Town where the homeowner had swapped in a $22 aquarium UV bulb: “Show the photo first. Talk second.” If the lamp isn’t producing measured 254-nanometer output at the specified distance from the coil, it’s not doing the job, no matter what the packaging claims.
