Whole-home purifiers (Models 5000, 5010, and the newer 1210/2210/3210 series) use a factory sanitizer cartridge that clips into the cabinet downstream of the media filter. The 5000-series cartridge is larger, roughly 16 by 20 inches, while the 1210-series uses a compact 10 by 12 inch version. They’re not interchangeable. Check the label inside the cabinet door for the model stamp, or measure the existing tray.

UV-C germicidal systems (Models 1910, 1920, 1930) mount a lamp assembly inside the plenum, the main sheet-metal box above your furnace. The lamp sleeve degrades from ozone exposure and needs replacement every 9,000 hours, which in Chicago’s heating-heavy climate is about 18-24 months of actual runtime. The 1930 uses a dual-lamp configuration that costs more to treat but covers larger homes common in the North Shore suburbs.

Steam and bypass humidifiers (Models 800, 700, 600) develop biofilm in their distribution tubes. Aprilaire sells a sanitizer kit, part 80, for the 800-series steam canister. Aftermarket equivalents exist from Guardsman, but we’ve found the OEM kit seals better against the 212°F operating temperature. Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

• Persistent musty odor from registers after filter changes. The Aprilaire unit is moving air, but the sanitizer cartridge or UV lamp has lost efficacy. Bacteria colonize the damp surfaces inside the plenum, especially in summer when Chicago’s lake-effect humidity pushes indoor relative pressure above 60 percent.
• Red status light that won’t reset on Models 5000/5010. This indicates the electronic air cleaner’s ionizing wires are fouled or the sanitizer interlock has failed. The system defaults to safe mode and stops producing the charged field that makes the sanitizer work.
• Visible biofilm or black staining around the humidifier distribution tube. On the 800-series steam units, this means the sanitizing cycle isn’t reaching temperature. The canister’s heating element may be scaled from Chicago’s hard lake-source water, but the sanitizer kit itself often needs replacement first.
• UV lamp glow appears dim or purple instead of blue-white. UV-C lamps at 254 nanometers fade to visible purple as the mercury vapor degrades. By the time you can see the color shift, output has dropped below the 40 microwatts per square centimeter needed for effective kill rates.
• Increased allergy symptoms after furnace startup in October. Chicago’s first cold snap forces the system from intermittent fan to continuous heat. If the sanitizer failed over summer, that first blast distributes accumulated spores. We see this pattern every year in Oak Park and Evanston homes with Aprilaire 1210s installed during the 2015-2018 new-construction boom.

You can check the Aprilaire model number on the cabinet label, verify the lamp color through the viewport if your unit has one, and confirm the filter is seated properly, a misaligned filter will trigger false sanitizer faults on the 5000 series. You can also shut power at the breaker before any inspection, UV lamps and steam canisters carry live voltage even when the thermostat is off.

What you shouldn’t do: remove a UV lamp assembly without confirming the capacitor is discharged, the ballast stores a lethal charge. Don’t attempt to descale an 800-series steam canister without the proper drain setup, the sludge is acidic and Chicago’s municipal water treatment leaves mineral deposits that clog household drains. And don’t guess at cartridge compatibility, the 1210 and 2210 trays look identical from the outside but have different clip spacing.
