Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Guardsman register and grille cleaning in Chicago typically runs $140-$280 per system for full removal, cleaning, and reinstallation, with most jobs scheduled within 48 hours. We stock Guardsman-compatible register assemblies and grille hardware on our trucks, so replacement parts don’t add a second trip. Most owners realize something’s wrong when they notice uneven airflow between rooms or visible debris collecting on the grille face that won’t wipe clean.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman registers and grilles fall into three product families you’ll see in Chicago homes: the standard stamped-steel wall and ceiling series (common in 1950s-1980s construction across neighborhoods like Portage Park and Albany Park), the extruded aluminum architectural line (typical in 1990s-2010s builds in Lincoln Park and the near suburbs), and the return-air filter grille assemblies with built-in frames. The critical compatibility gotcha is the mounting-ear spacing: Guardsman’s stamped-steel line uses 5.5-inch on-center screw holes through the 1970s, then shifted to 6.25-inch on-center for later production. Measure hole-to-hole before ordering. The aluminum line requires a different depth of rough opening, usually 3.75 inches versus 2.5 inches for steel.

We carry both OEM Guardsman hardware and quality aftermarket equivalents from Hart & Cooley and Shoemaker. For the stamped-steel registers found in Chicago’s two-flats and bungalows, aftermarket grilles match dimensionally and typically cost 30-40% less. For the aluminum architectural line with integrated dampers, we recommend OEM - the damper linkage geometry is proprietary, and we’ve seen aftermarket versions bind after two seasons of Chicago’s humidity swings.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
  • Visible debris ring around the grille face. Dust and particulate bypass the filter and electrostatically bond to the grille vanes. In Chicago, this accelerates in winter when forced-air systems run continuously and indoor humidity drops below 25%.
  • Uneven airflow or whistling at the register. The damper blade inside the register throat has seized or the linkage has corroded. We see this often in lakefront condos where salt air infiltrates the ductwork.
  • Grille loose in the drywall or sagging from the ceiling. The spring-steel mounting clips have fatigued, or the plastic ear brackets on newer Guardsman models have crystallized from heat cycling. A falling ceiling register in a child’s bedroom is not a repair to defer.
  • Mold or mildew staining on the grille face or surrounding ceiling. Condensation forms on the metal when cold supply air hits humid attic or wall cavity air. In Chicago’s shoulder seasons, this is common in homes with poorly insulated duct runs near the roofline.
  • Register won’t open or close fully. The operator wheel or lever has stripped, or debris has packed into the throat behind the grille. Owners sometimes force the mechanism and snap the internal linkage - at that point, cleaning won’t restore function.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Register/grille removal, deep cleaning, reinstallation (per register) $45-$85
Full system register & grille cleaning (typical 8-12 register home) $140-$280
OEM Guardsman replacement register, installed $75-$140 per unit
Aftermarket equivalent replacement, installed $55-$95 per unit
Return-air filter grille assembly with frame, installed $120-$220

The range depends on three factors: accessibility (ceiling registers in 10-foot foyers take longer), whether the duct boot behind the grille needs repair, and OEM versus aftermarket part selection. Every quote is written before work starts, Haven Standard Clause 1. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation labor and any part we supply. We also photograph the throat behind every grille before and after - if the camera shows clean metal, you’ll see it. If it shows a collapsed flex duct or disconnected boot, you’ll see that too, and we’ll quote the repair in writing before proceeding.

What you can safely check yourself: remove the grille face by releasing the spring clips or unscrewing the mounting ears. Look into the duct boot with a flashlight. If you see surface dust and the damper moves freely, a vacuum with a soft brush attachment may suffice. Do not use a shop vac with a narrow crevice tool - the concentrated suction can collapse older flex duct or pull loose fiberglass lining.

Where DIY goes wrong: ceiling registers in Chicago’s older homes often have plaster or drywall degradation around the rough opening. Removing the grille can enlarge the hole or crack the surrounding finish. The spring clips on Guardsman’s stamped-steel line are under tension and can launch across the room if released improperly. More critically, if you find mold staining, disturbing it without containment spreads spores through the system. We use negative-pressure extraction during register work - the duct run is placed under suction so nothing migrates upstream. That’s not equipment most homeowners keep in the garage.
